Print vendors ask for 300 DPI at final dimensions — but your camera or scan might not deliver enough pixels for a 16×20″ poster. AI upscaling increases pixel count while reconstructing detail, letting smaller masters reach acceptable print sizes. The trick is knowing your target DPI and picking the right model for faces vs landscapes.
The DPI formula
DPI = pixel width ÷ print width in inches. A 2400 px wide image printed at 8″ wide gives 300 DPI. If your file is 600 px wide, you need 4× upscale to reach 2400 px — or 8× for larger formats. Always solve for the longest edge that constrains your layout.
Choose scale by plan and target size
2× (Free): proofs and small cards from already-decent masters.
4× (Starter+): 8×10″ and 11×14″ from phone photos.
8× (Pro+): large posters and tight crops from older archives.
Use the Face model for portraits
Portraits punish generic sharpening — eyes and teeth turn crunchy. The Face model on Pro prioritizes skin tone continuity and eye detail without plastic skin. Group shots and weddings benefit the most; switch to General for architecture and product tables.
Pre-print checklist
Crop to final aspect ratio before upscaling.
Upscale and compare at 100% zoom in the workspace slider.
Export PNG for print shops; JPEG only if they require it.
Embed sRGB unless the lab specifies Adobe RGB.
