How to Upscale Midjourney Images for Print and Web
Midjourney outputs are sharp at native size but fall apart when enlarged. Here is a practical workflow for 2×–8× upscaling in the browser.

Midjourney delivers stunning compositions at modest resolutions — often 1024×1024 or similar depending on your settings. That is plenty for social feeds, but it breaks down fast when you need poster prints, hero banners, or crisp zoom-ins. Upscaling closes that gap by reconstructing detail instead of stretching pixels.
Why Midjourney images need a dedicated upscale step
A simple resize in Photoshop or your browser makes edges soft and textures muddy. AI upscalers trained on real-world and illustration data infer plausible high-frequency detail — hair strands, fabric weave, foliage — that was never in the original file. For generative art, a model tuned for flat color regions and clean edges performs better than a general photo enhancer.
Social posts: 2× is usually enough for retina displays.
Portfolio hero images: 4× gives headroom for cropping.
Large-format print: use General at up to 8× on Pro, or Anime at up to 4× — then verify DPI at your target size.
Step 1 — Export the best source from Midjourney
Start from the highest-quality version you have: upscale inside Midjourney if you are on a paid plan, or use the original PNG before any compression. Avoid re-saving through chat thumbnails — they are heavily compressed. PNG or high-quality WebP preserves edges that downstream AI models can extend.
Step 2 — Choose scale and model
On Rescalio Upscaler, upload your file to the workspace, then pick a scale factor. Free accounts can run 2× with the General model — enough for a quick quality check. For Midjourney-style illustrations, the Anime model on Pro is the better fit: it respects flat fills, line art, and stylized shading without over-sharpening skin-toned areas that do not exist in your image.
Upload PNG, JPEG, or WebP (up to your plan file limit).
Select Anime for illustrations; General works for photorealistic MJ v6 renders.
Choose 2× or 4× with Anime on Pro (max 4×); up to 8× with General on Pro for photorealistic exports.
Run upscale and watch progress in the workspace.
Step 3 — Compare before you commit
Use the built-in before/after slider to inspect eyes, typography, and fine patterns. AI upscaling can occasionally hallucinate texture in smooth skies — if you see unwanted grain, try a lower scale or switch models. Download only when the preview matches your bar for client delivery.
Step 4 — Print and delivery checklist
For print, divide your upscaled pixel dimensions by the physical width in inches to get effective DPI. Example: 4096 px wide on an 18″ poster ≈ 227 DPI — acceptable for many inkjet prints viewed at arm's length. For gallery wraps or fine art, target 300 DPI at final size or upscale further.
